The Energy for Discovering

Even as the times change, the heart and soul of the Mitsui Matsushima Group remain constant―coal, the resource for which demand in society has crossed the boundaries of time. Founded in Nagasaki, our company began as Matsushima Tanko Co., Ltd. in 1913. Throughout the century, we focused our energies on managing domestic mining at the Oshima and Ikeshima mines.
Trends such as the shift of energy sources to oil, the influx of cheap coal from overseas, and the two oil shocks of the 1970s contributed to dramatic changes in the energy complex. We have confronted these changes and continued to provide a stable supply of quality coal. As the leading mining company in Japan, we have fulfilled a vital role in the country’s rapid social and economic development.

In 2001, we made the difficult decision to close the Ikeshima mine. This closed the curtain on nearly a century of our domestic mining operations, and accelerated our new endeavors toward a global strategy. Utilizing the knowledge, technologies, and passion acquired through our many years of coal mine operations, we shifted our activities to the world stage. By procuring coal form Australia, Canada and other locations, we are meeting ever-increasing domestic demand.
As a company with core operations in fuel and energy, we have developed a diverse array of businesses. We are expanding our fields to focus on services that are essential to everyday lives in order to fulfill our corporate philosophy: “to serve people and society.”
